Heyaaa!
I’ve been trying to move on to being an independent creator from a freelance creator. It’s been over a year now.
I didn’t put much dedication into it actually. I took time off from freelance projects occasionally. And spent those on my personal projects.
I did try a slew of things. But went nowhere.
Some templates here and there, a bunch of ebooks, graphic designing, wall art, comic strips… OK, I can’t recall anything else.
Yes, I even bought an iPad to create free-hand art. Tried some doodles, but that’s it. Now I use it to watch videos and check my Twitter account.
So, what went wrong?

OK, back to my story…
What went wrong is I started competing against others.
I saw something, I liked the idea. And I wanted to create things and sell them.
In fact, I did whip up a few good creations. People liked them.
Yes, people liked them. I probably didn’t. I was doing it for the fame. To be good at it and make monies.
What went wrong is I forgot why I was a creator writer. Good writer. And proud of it.
A friend reminded me of that last week.
It’s a quote I found in an article he shared with me:
“We need more artists in the world. People who make stuff. People who don’t want anything in return. People who hone their skills because they love what they do. If you’re one of these artists, don’t look back.”
This was me 2-3 years ago. I was people.
I wrote for the sheer fun of writing. I tried new projects for fun.
It was in the last year that I started paying more attention to the money side. Trying to work out new monetization ideas. That’s when things went haywire.
I entered the race without paying attention to whether I’m loving what I’m doing.
The thing is, if you want to be successful while creating, you’ve to love it. Just love doing it. It's just you and you. Your only competition is you. Today, tomorrow, next day…
When I started book blogging in July, I decided I’ll try it out for six months. Try for six months before figuring out how to grow and earn from it.
Yes, I made a list of potential ideas, of course, but I didn’t want to implement them until next year.
I forgot again. And I started paying more attention to marketing, trying to get attention instead of just creating.
So, it’s time to get back to doing. Writing just because I want to write. Actually, that’s why I bailed from sharing content tips and tools in my newsletter, and entered into sharing experiences. Once a week. Hoping every Wednesday. 🤞🏻
You might find a few bits of motivation somewhere in these stories. You might not.
Bidding adieu.
Live long and prosper.
See you next week, with another story.
