Heya
How many times have you found that you’re not cut out to read books? 👀
You pick a book, find it un-interesting. Then, you pick another. Same issue. And then again.
So, you leave reading altogether.
Happens to me too. I picked my reading habit back in 2020. And as I browsed through my TBR (to-be-read) book list, there were many books I swiped left... passed for another day.
I even dropped a few books halfway through or after reading 20-30%.
Does that mean I should stop reading? No.
It's just that life is too short to spend time on books you don't like to read. :P
Yes, you can like to read and still not like to read a particular book. You might even find a "bestseller" repelling or over-hyped after reading.

Oh, wait, I have a gift for you. Towards the end of the newsletter. Redeem it for sure. :)
Now…
Actually, finding your fav book(s) depends on the situation you're in.
Here I'm letting you in on a little-known secret from a book lover - Anmol (LinkedIn)
He shared (and I quote):
"Every book has a stage. If we read [the book] at that stage in life, then only it's useful. The reason most people hate reading is because they don't pick a book according to their life stage."
And it's 127% true.
You know, for a long time my favourite book was The Secret. I found it helpful when I read it back in 2012-13. So helpful that I ordered the other 3-4 books by the writer. I never read them. Even The Secret doesn't resonate anymore.
I mean, I do follow the teachings, but I can't read that book today (or any self-help book, for that matter). I don't feel the need for any such "help" now. So, if I had picked The Secret now, I would've dumped it after a few pages.
Some of the other books that I didn't like much were...
Ogilvy on Advertising
Zero to Sold
Quiet: The Power of Introverts
The Everything Store
Everybody Writes
Are the above books that bad that a reader didn't find them interesting?
No, it's just that I am not at the "stage" the book is meant for.
For example, I would've probably loved Ogilvy on Advertising if I had read it 3 years ago when I knew nothing about advertising psychology. Similarly, I might have liked Everybody Writes if I had read it 5 years back when I was just starting as a professional writer.
Another reason you won't like a book is when you aren't the target reader of the book.
Last week only, I picked Endure, which I received as a gift. It was about physical balance, brain-and-body connection and similar things. And I had no interest in the subject.
It was meant for athletes and sportspeople or others who would like to be good at running, swimming and other similar physically-intensive activities. It was a motivational book full of research-backed techniques.
I shelved it for later. Maybe someday I'll read it again when I'm in that life stage.
So, yep, I don't always like to read when I can't find the ideal book for the mood I'm in.
My current fav book keeps changing as I read new and newer books. My recent favs are:
The Psychology of Money
Steal Like an Artist
Do Epic Shit
I've listed all my favourite books on the page: Abhijeet Recommends
If you love reading business-y books, you'll like the list for sure. The page is still in construction; put it up only this weekend.
