From financial analyst to design instructor - Creative Confidence #21
This is a story about Jeremy Utley trapped by the curse of competence. He could successfully perform all the requirements of his analytical job, but he gained no real fulfillment from what he did.
Later, he enrolled in an introductory Bootcamp class at Stanford's d.school, while studying for MBA at Graduate School of Business.
He realized how much fun he was having in the class as he struggled to grapple with ambiguity, prototype his ideas, and make creative decisions. He kept taking classes and became increasingly torn between the mindset of the old job and his new way of thinking.
Eventually, he decided to leave behind the tempting salary and status of his previous career path.
He continued at the d.school as Fellow, becoming a director of executive education later. It no longer felt like work to him.
Lesson:
Feel the purpose and meaning in whatever you do. And that shift in perspective can open up a world of possibilities.
