Dan Roam and his Napkin Academy - Creative Confidence #9
Dan Roam, author of The Back of the Napkin and an expert on the art of visual thinking, helps people get over the hesitation to sketch their idea.
He lowers the barrier to grasp the marker pen and approach the whiteboard. He does this by dissociating artistic drawing from drawing for communication.
One of the lessons in his web-based Napkin Academy is called How to Draw Anything.
He insists that everything you ever need to draw can be deconstructed into five basic shapes. These are a line, a square, a circle, a triangle, and an irregular shape he calls a blob. Next, he explains the concept of drawing fundamentals, such as size, position and direction.
Dan doesn't exactly teach you to draw. He just teaches you how to make better use of the simple drawing skills you already have.
Lesson:
A nudge towards creative confidence is important. Resist judging yourself. If you can just grab a pen and stand up, you're halfway there.
